Things turned out differently today

Bilka Kopie

Things turned out differently today. I thought, I would share yesterdays architecture photo of the former „Bilka“ department store here and provide you with a few anecdotes, but searching for the architects name, I came up with an little published part of modern german history.

The architect of this three-storeyd, reinforced concrete building was Hanns Dustmann (*1902 †1979) Dustmann worked as a self empoyed architect since 1945 and up to his death, mainly designed major buildings for banks and insurances.

Before 1945 he became main architect for the Hitler Youth in 1937, worked directly under Albert Speer for 5 years, e.g. planning the redesign of Berlin, to become „World Capital Germania“, as one of the „Beauftragten Architekten des Generalbauinspektors für die Reichshauptstadt“. These are just to name a few of his positions. Lots of architects alike had a, let me call it, fluent passage into post war Germany. Lots of friends in relevant places and almost finished plans for rebuilding cities, they were denazificated easily and never were bothered publicly.
